Misconception: Because vaccines usually take many years to develop, the Covid-19 vaccine has not had time to pass the same safety tests.
Facts: There are three main reasons why the Covid-19 vaccine could be developed so quickly.
Firstly, scientists received a huge amount of resources and money in a short amount of time.
Secondly, there was a great deal of interest among volunteers to participate in trials. (It usually takes a long time to recruit the number of volunteers that are needed for a vaccine to be approved.)
Thirdly, there was a lot of research that could be built on, for example about the SARS virus, which also belongs to the corona family.
– I don’t want to get vaccinated because the vaccine was developed so quickly.
– The vaccine against Covid-19 has undergone the same safety tests that all vaccines must undergo.
There is a misconception that some tests have been skipped to develop the vaccine so quickly, but that is not true.
– How could it be done so quickly then?
– Partly because the world invested an incredible amount of money and resources in developing the vaccines.
Another reason was that people volunteered to help test the vaccine. (Before a vaccine can be approved, it needs to be tested on lots of volunteers and it usually takes a long time to find so many.)
In addition, there was already a lot of research on similar viruses that researchers and companies could build upon.
Now a large proportion of the world’s population has been vaccinated and the vaccines are both safe and effective.
